Playing Blackjack in Gibraltar

Although this Web Site focuses mainly on interactive gaming, I thought I would share my experiences of playing at the tables in Gibraltar – one of the havens of interactive gaming licensees.

‘The Rock’ or peninsula of Gibraltar is host to many online gaming companies such as William Hill, PartyGaming, and Ladbokes. The organisations are drawn by the attractive tax laws in the same way that other online gaming organisations hold licensees in Malta, Guernsey, Dutch Antilles, Curaçao, and other locations.

Strangely enough, there is only one land based Casino in Gibraltar and that is operated by Gala Casinos – popular for their Bingo operations in the United Kingdom. The Casino is situated in Ocean Village, a scenic part of Gibraltar surrounded by many restaurants and pubs and adjacent to the marina.

The building is attractive and upon entering you are welcomed by the concierge and immediately presented with a sports betting lounge – an obvious link to Coral Sports Betting which is part of the same group of companies – and then a bar. Downstairs comprises of slot machines, so it’s upstairs we’ll move.

The first floor has a number of bars as well as an eatery, but most importantly the tables. I noticed Blackjack, Roulette, and Poker. It was a Thursday night and not terribly busy so I kicked off at the £5 Blackjack table. The Croupier was friendly and I easily got into the swing of things.

As I mentioned, the evening was quiet and there were only two of us playing against the house. The other player decided to take a break and the dealer closed up the table, saying there was a minimum requirement of two boxes being open for the table to operate. This was news to me, and something that I had never experienced at any other casino. Anyway, no one else joined the game so I ended up opening a second box which seemed to work in my favour. After a number of hands another player joined but I continued with two boxes open and this continued working in my favour.

The Dealer soon changed so I decided to cash out, having tripled my investment. The table also had two side-games which included ‘Perfect Pairs’ but as usual these are just money-spinners for the casino and as any Table player should know, they should be steered clear of.

I decided to give the Roulette wheel a spin or two with a small portion of my winnings. As usual though, the results were totally random and of course reinforced my opinion that Blackjack is the only way to go when playing at a Casino.

The Bank was flexible in that they paid out either Gibraltar Pounds or UK Pounds, so no hassle in getting your money out.

Overall it was a pleasant experience and although the table staff were not as professional as other Casino’s I’ve experienced, I would definitely go back and wager some more on the Blackjack Tables.

Gala Casino can be found at the Ocean Village in Gibraltar and is open every day of the week from 10:00 to very late.
